Article Processing Charges
Article Processing Charges (APC)
Our APCs comply with major funder policies (e.g., Plan S, Horizon Europe, Wellcome Trust) and all articles are published under CC BY 4.0 for immediate open access. APCs are usually covered by institutions or funders, and waivers or discounts are available if external funding is not accessible.
1. Overview
To support open-access publishing, accepted articles are subject to an APC that covers editorial handling, peer review, DOI registration through CrossRef, archiving, and platform maintenance. Waivers and discounts are available for authors from low-income countries, early-career researchers, and unfunded projects. No fees are charged at submission, and editorial decisions are independent of ability to pay.
2. Waivers and Discounts
We offer the following support options:
- Full APC waivers for authors from low-income countries.
- Partial discounts for authors from lower-middle-income countries.
- Discounts for early-career researchers.
- Discounts for unfunded projects.
Waiver requests can be made at submission and are decided independently of editorial review.
3. Funding and Compliance
- Our APC model complies with major open access funder policies, including Plan S, Horizon Europe, the Wellcome Trust, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
- Articles are published under CC BY 4.0 licensing, meeting funder requirements for immediate open access.
- We support authors in including proper funding acknowledgments in their manuscripts.
- Many research funders and institutions cover APCs through dedicated publishing grants or agreements. Authors are encouraged to check with their universities and funding agencies before submission.
- We provide invoices and receipts formatted according to institutional and funder requirements for reimbursement.
- APCs are typically paid by the author’s institution, research funder, or grant.
- If external funding is unavailable, authors may apply for waivers or discounts in line with our Waiver and Discount Policy.
4. Invoice Timing
- After Acceptance Only: Invoices for APCs are issued only after a manuscript has been formally accepted for publication. This ensures that editorial and peer review decisions remain fully independent of payment considerations.
- Payment Period: Authors (or their institutions/funders) are expected to complete payment within 30 days of invoice issuance, unless other arrangements are agreed upon.
- No Submission Fees: There are no charges at submission or during peer review. Authors only pay once their article has successfully passed the review and acceptance process.
- Flexibility: Institutions or funders requiring specific documentation (e.g., purchase orders, tax details) may request it before invoicing. Special payment schedules can be arranged upon request.
