Yuan Ren (1972- ), PhD, Professor at Fudan University's School of Social Development and Public Policy, and at Institute of Population Research (IPR). He was a board member of International Sociology Association (ISA) Urban and Regional Sociology Research Committee (RC21) (2014-2018), and board member of Urban Governance for Sustainable Cities Network (UGSCN)(2013-2015). He is steering committee member of Urban China Research Network (UCRN). He is Fellow of New Century Excellent Talents, awarded by Chinese National Education Commission (2012).
Prof. Ren received his Ph.D. in Economics from Fudan University in 1999 and since then he has been teaching at the school. He was promoted to full professor in 2006. He has been visiting fellowships at University of Aberdeen in the UK by British Council (2000), post-doctoral research associate at University of Illinois at Chicago (2002), and visiting researcher at the International Center for the Study of East Asian Development in Japan (2006). He has been Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Brown Univerity (2015-2016). His main research interests include population, urbanizaiton and social development, and his research covers population and development, migration and urbanization, aging studies, employment and labor market, welfare institions and social development, social work and social policy, urban affair and urban governance, urban sustainablity, and so on, with a primary focus on China.
Prof. Ren was the editor of Historical Lessons: Chinese Population Development Report (1949-2018) (Beijing: 2019), co-editor of Greening China's Urban Governance (Springer: 2019); author of China's Next Urbanization (Shanghai: 2017), author of Post-Demographic Transition (Shanghai: 2016); co-editor of Reshaping Welfare Institutions in China and the Nordic Countries (Helsinki & Shanghai: 2014); co-author Migration and Urbanization in Contemporary China (Shanghai: 2013); author of Temporary Migrants'Living Patterns and Their Social Integration in Urban China (Shanghai: 2012), co-editor and contributor of The Era of Global City-Regions (Shanghai: 2009), author of Employment in Transition Society: Community-based Employment and Social Policies (Shanghai: 2007), editor and contributor of Chinese Informal Employment Report (Chongqing: 2007), and et al. He also has published a score of articles in such journals as Journal of East Asian Studies, Globalizagtions, International Planning Studies, International Journal of Health Policy Management, Chinese Journal of Population Science, Social Science in China, Sociological Research, Population and Economics, Population Studies, Chinese Population, Resource and Environment, and several edited books.
