Summary

I am a demographer (MA in Social Science from the Universityof Chicago and PhD in Sociology/Demography and HumanDevelopment from Cornell University). During 1981-1998, I workedas a research consultant to the UN in New York; a ResearchFellow at the East-West Center in Hawaii; an Associate Professorin the Department of Community Health Sciences at Aga KhanUniversity in Karachi, Pakistan; and a Senior Associate in the Dept.of Population Dynamics, School of Public Health at Johns HopkinsUniversity. In 1998-99, I was awarded a fellowship by the LondonSchool of Economics to conduct research on the demographicimpact of migration between India and Pakistan. From 2000 to2008, I was a Professor and Head of the Reproductive HealthProgram at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. In 2005,at the invitation of the Office of Population Research at PrincetonUniversity, I spent a semester conducting research on immigrants toAmerica from Muslim-majority countries. I also served as a thesisco-supervisor of students enrolled in PhD programs at LondonUniversity and Carnegie Mellon University. From 2008 to 2010, I wasa Senior Research Fellow at Pew Research Center in WashingtonDC and later joined the School of Public Policy at George MasonUniversity as a Research Professor, where I am still holding theposition of Distinguished Senior Fellow. Since 2023, I have beena Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Arts & Sciences and in theFaculty of Health Sciences at Aga Khan University in Karachi,Pakistan. 
On various occasions, I was a research consultant to UNFPA in NewYork and the World Bank in Washington DC. In 2023, on behalf ofUNFPA, I served as an advisor to the Pakistan Bureau of Statisticsfor planning the first digital census in Pakistan. 
Besides over 70 research articles or book chapters, my otherpublications include, as co-editor/co-author, "Migration in Pakistan";"Islam, the State and Population"; "Linkages between Populationand Millennium Development Goals: The Asian Perspective";"Sharing Population and Development Research across South andWest Asia"; "The Future of the Global Muslim Population" and"Megacities: Crises and Challenges". My current research interestsinclude: 
"South Asian and Middle Eastern Immigrants and Diaspora inAmerica," and "Human Development and Demographic Transitionin South Asian, West Asian and North African countries". I ama founding member of the Asian Population Association and thepresent President of the Population Association of Pakistan.
