The Meme-ification of Politics: Social Media Humor and Electoral Narratives

Abstract

This article explores how political memes on platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram influence electoral narratives during national campaigns. Based on a content analysis of 2,450 memes from the 2024 U.S. election cycle, results suggest that humor lowers barriers to political engagement among young adults, while simultaneously reinforcing partisan divides. Memes serve as both tools of satire and instruments of disinformation. The findings highlight the dual role of digital humor as a mechanism for both democratic participation and polarization.
