Football Fandom and Sustainability: The Role of Gender, Generations, and Sports Experience

Abstract

This study utilizes data from 1,019 U.S. adults to explore the demographic factors influencing the preference for football as a favorite sport, focusing on gender, generational differences, and previous sports experiences. The results show that men are significantly more likely than women to favor football. Football preference is highest among Gen X but declines sharply among Gen Z, particularly among women. This decline reflects shifting interests, safety concerns, and a growing inclination towards digital and emerging sports. Among males whose favorite sport is football, there is no significant difference in participation rates for baseball, basketball, volleyball, and other sports. However, there is a significant difference in participation rates for football, soccer, hockey, and golf. In contrast, for females, there is no significant difference in participation rates across any of the eight sports between general participants and those who favor football.
